Nintendos Patent Will Push Casual Gaming To Lazy Gaming

I was recently reading headlines for the Wii looking for news about upcoming games and here are the two top stories that I saw coming up in my search. The first story is a report that Nintendo is expecting that the popular new years resolution to get healthy will push demand for the Wii Fit so much that there may be a shortage. The second story and this one is a doozy of a story is about a woman that “Kills Her Dog” with her Wiimote! Yes you read that right and it is a legitimate story, the video is on a news channels website.

Oh yeah there was one more story that a lot of you may have seen because it made it to the feature story on Yahoo! earlier today. This one is perhaps the most disturbing to me as a person that has played video games for most of my life. Apparently Nintendo has filed a patent that essentially would push their “casual gaming experience” even further.

This idea behind this patent is to put in a “how to” button in the game. So at any point that you may get stuck or frustrated you can bring up this “how to” screen and move past your stuck point. Also you will be able to jump into the game at any level you want from the start. Essentially they are going to wipe out any need to find cheat codes, hidden levels or any other hidden treasures that programmers usually put into their games.

Nintendo has really become a double edged sword for me when it comes to video games. I love that the Wii has gotten all this attention and brought all this money into video gaming in general. I really enjoy playing Wii sports with family and friends when ever they come over to play. At the same time I am very frustrated with the quality of games for the Wii and I realize that is the biggest gripe for the Wii299 in Wii Sports Bowling. So yes I have solved that problem by playing the real next gen gaming consoles and that’s where I get my gaming fix for real games.

I enjoy the idea that there are part of the games that I play that are hidden away and you really have to work to beat the game and open up new levels. I also appreciate the fact that there is a whole industry that was created just for cheat codes and hidden levels to games. It’s part of the games that gamers love and the idea of wiping that all out and giving you push button access to all the hidden secrets and codes is a bad idea for video games in my opinion.
