Are you one of the almost 9 million Wii players to get a Wii Fit? If not it’s probably because you have not been able to find one in the stores yet. The Wii Fit game has been on the global market since12/01-5/21 depending what territory you lived in. Is still at the top of the sales chart pushing out over 200,000 a week! By comparison the monster hit Grand Theft Auto 4 which is sold on both the PS3 and 360 had a release date of 04/29 has sold well over 10 million copies but is no longer in the top of the charts.
With Wii Fit holding the numbers that it has been and we get closer to the holiday season those sales numbers will only rise higher again. Wii Fit by the end of the year is going to outsell the hardcore gamers dream game of Grand Theft Auto 4, WTF? Let me type that again, Wii Fit is going to outsell GTA4??? If you would have told me that at the beginning of this year I would have put money on it not happening.
So what’s driving the Wii Fit craze? Women! Women have been that elusive gaming demographic that no company has been able to get since the beginning of gaming time. Nintendo in the last two years however has managed to hit the sweet spot for women and gaming and their sales are the proof. The women of the world are the driving force behind Nintendos resurgence to number one and they absolutely know it. If your a hardcore gamer you already know this to be true as Nintendo has all but abandoned the hardcore gamers in favor of their new untapped market.
Sure you have an occasional game that comes to market that will appeal to some of the hardcore fans but for the most part when you look at the library of games for the Wii it’s all about the casual gamer. The Wii Fit is the shining star of casual gaming it will be interesting to see what other games will come out on the Wii that will take advantage of the Balance board. I know there are some snowboarding games coming and a new workout video game with the fitness trainer from the Biggest Loser TV series.
